Gutter Problems: What To Look For

Part of a healthy roof includes having a healthy gutter system. Gutters give rain, hail, and runoff a safe passage away from your home to protect from pooling, leaks and water damage. Keeping your gutters clear help maintain your healthy roof environment so it’s important to take care of them!

Cleaned out or not, there are a few unwelcome neighbors that can move into your gutters and possibly cause issues. Here are a few things to look out for.

Bug Out

If you haven’t cleaned your gutters in a while, you could be creating a nice moist atmosphere for bugs to move in. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in shallow standing water. As a home or business owner, watch out for leaves and branches blocking water from moving. But it’s not just about keeping your gutters clean. If your gutters are starting to sag in certain areas or showing wear at the seams they might be holding water and inviting bugs!

Dry gutters are also great breeding grounds for bees and wasps. It can create a dangerous environment for your family and cause damage to your gutters. Just be careful when handling nests and consider calling in experts to dispose of wasp nests safely.

Pesky Nesters

Another type of nests that might settle in your gutters is birds. Bird nests can cause an annoyance and make it difficult to keep clean. Even worse, some nests are illegal to move! The Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it illegal in the United States to disturb the active nest any native bird without a permit. If you notice birds trying to make their home, dispose of any partial nesting materials before the nest is complete.

For some species, the nests are only in use for about a month out of the year and you can simply dispose of the nest after the younglings have left. Make note of native bird activity in your area to stay informed. The only thing worse than a clogged gutter is a hefty fine.

Gutter Garden

If you’ve been seriously neglecting your gutters, tree debris breaks down into rich soil providing a moist, nutrient-rich environment for plants to grow. From fungi to weeds, your gutters could start developing their own habitat up there! A gutter garden can cause irreparable damage to the whole system and is a good indicator your past due (Like way past due) on maintenance.
