What is a TPO roof?

When it comes to a commercial building there’s a lot of thought that goes into the space. The last thing you want to worry about is the stability of your roof or experiencing major leak issues. That’s why Earnest Roofing is equipped to help you select the best materials for your commercial roof based on your needs. So what is a TPO roof exactly?

TPO Roof

Put simply, a TPO roof is a single ply roofing membrane. It’s thin and rubberlike and has been used for commercial and industrial roofing since 1989. The name refers to the chemical composition of the roof membrane, which stands for Thermoplastic polyolefin. It can be installed in a variety of ways but the endgame is the same. There is just one single application and there are no multiple layers. TPO seams and flashings are completed using hot-air welding to form a watertight roof.

Why Get a TPO roof?

TPO roofs are great for a low slope commercial building. However, there’s still some benefits to consider when deciding between TPO and other materials. Take into consideration that TPO roofs are also:

  • Most environmentally friendly single ply system
  • Energy Efficient
  • Wind resistant, near puncture proof
  • Resistant to chemicals, acid, salt, oil, etc.
  • Extremely strong seams

If you’re looking for a roof that can withstand elements, grease and other chemicals you might want to consider a TPO membrane. There’s also a few downsides to consider!

The Cons of TPO Roofing

  • Because it’s still fairly new roofing material, it’s difficult to determine the lifetime of a TPO roof.
  • Improper installation is the cause of 99% of commercial leaks
  • More difficult maintenance

TPO is an up-and-coming material that is still in early experimentation days. That means a 4th generation TPO roof might perform worse than a 3rd generation.  The most important part however, is having it properly installed and maintained.
